West Scotland (Inner Hebrides)

Inner Hebrides

Overview

Oban to Mull, Skye, and the Small Isles: Atlantic Scotland's wild west coast, where the eagles, the whisky, and the anchorages justify the challenging conditions.

The Inner Hebrides are the islands closest to Scotland's west coast โ€” Mull, Skye, Coll, Tiree, the Small Isles โ€” and the passages between them constitute some of the most demanding and rewarding sailing in the British Isles. The landscape is volcanic and glacial: basalt columns on Staffa, the Cuillin ridge on Skye, white shell-sand beaches on Coll and Tiree that would not look out of place in the Caribbean if the water temperature were twenty degrees warmer. Oban, on the mainland, is the primary charter base. The town sits on a natural harbour overlooking the island of Kerrera, and the transit of the Sound of Kerrera โ€” past the ruins of Gylen Castle โ€” is the standard departure route. Charter companies operate from Dunstaffnage Marina and Oban's town pontoons. The standard route runs north-west from Oban through the Sound of Mull โ€” a sheltered, scenic passage between Mull and the mainland โ€” to Tobermory, Mull's main town, with its painted waterfront buildings, a distillery, and visitor moorings in the harbour. From Tobermory, the options diverge: west to Coll and Tiree, north to the Small Isles (Rum, Eigg, Muck, Canna), or across to Skye. Staffa, the uninhabited island with Fingal's Cave โ€” a sea cave of hexagonal basalt columns that inspired Mendelssohn's Hebrides Overture โ€” is a highlight accessible in settled weather. Landing requires calm conditions; the anchorage is exposed. The weather is the defining factor. Atlantic depressions cross the west coast regularly, even in summer. A week's charter may include sunshine, rain, fog, and a gale, sometimes in the same day. The wind is predominantly south-westerly, 10-25 knots on a good day, with frontal passages bringing 30-40 knots. Tidal streams in the sounds and narrows add complexity โ€” the Gulf of Corryvreckan, between Jura and Scarba, produces one of the world's most powerful tidal whirlpools. Provisioning in Oban is good โ€” a supermarket, fishmonger, and the harbour's general store. Tobermory has a Co-op. Beyond these, island shops are small and intermittent. Fuel is at Oban and Tobermory; water at most pontoons. Midges โ€” the tiny biting insects of the Scottish Highlands โ€” are a summer constant in calm, damp conditions. Insect repellent and a midge net are essential equipment.
