Tobago Cays

Windward Islands

Overview

A cluster of five uninhabited islands inside a horseshoe reef in the southern Grenadines, where the turtle snorkelling and reef anchoring define the Caribbean charter experience.

The Tobago Cays are five small, uninhabited islands sitting inside a horseshoe reef in the southern Grenadines, forming a marine park that is the single most visited charter anchorage in the Windward Islands. The reef breaks the Atlantic swell from the east, creating a lagoon of calm, clear water over white sand where green turtles graze on the seagrass beds and rays cruise the shallows. The approach from the west, through the channel between Petit Bateau and Petit Rameau, is straightforward in good light โ€” the reef edges are visible, the water shifts from deep blue to turquoise as the seabed rises, and the mooring balls inside the lagoon are maintained by the marine park authority. Anchoring is also permitted in designated areas. The eastern reef, Horseshoe Reef, is the main navigational boundary โ€” the Atlantic breaks heavily on its windward side, and the difference in sea state between inside and outside the reef is dramatic. The snorkelling is the draw. Swimming from the beach on Petit Bateau east toward the reef, turtles are almost guaranteed โ€” the seagrass beds support a resident population that has become habituated to swimmers. The reef itself holds the usual Caribbean cast: parrotfish, sergeant majors, brain coral, fan coral. The water clarity in the lagoon is consistently five to eight metres. There are no buildings on the Tobago Cays. Local vendors arrive by boat from Mayreau and Union Island, selling lobster, fruit, and barbecue from their dinghies โ€” a transaction that has become part of the anchorage's culture. A beach barbecue arranged with these vendors, with lobster grilled over coals on Baradal's beach, is the customary evening. The marine park charges a per-yacht fee, collected by rangers who patrol the anchorage. The mooring balls are limited, and in high season โ€” February through April โ€” the lagoon can fill by early afternoon. Arriving before noon secures a spot. Overnight, the trade winds keep the temperature comfortable and the bugs at bay. The Tobago Cays are not a destination in isolation โ€” they are the centrepiece of a Grenadines charter, typically reached as a two or three-night stop within a week-long itinerary departing from St Vincent, Martinique, or Union Island.
