Sydney to Pittwater

New South Wales

Overview

Sydney Harbour to the Hawkesbury River via Pittwater, combining one of the world's great harbour sails with the quiet bushland estuaries of Broken Bay.

Sailing out of Sydney Harbour, past the Opera House and beneath the Harbour Bridge, is a passage that manages to be both postcard-familiar and genuinely thrilling. The harbour is a working waterway โ€” ferries, cargo ships, naval vessels, and racing fleets share the water โ€” and the charter experience here combines urban sailing with a quick escape into the bushland waterways north of the city. Charter bases sit at various points around the harbour and on Pittwater, 20 nautical miles north. The passage from Sydney Harbour through the Heads โ€” the narrow gap between North Head and South Head that connects the harbour to the Pacific โ€” is the key transition. The Heads can produce confused seas when an ocean swell meets an outgoing tide, and in fresh southerly conditions the bar can be genuinely rough. In settled north-easterly weather, the crossing is straightforward. Pittwater, a long, sheltered inlet on the north side of Broken Bay, is the destination. The western shore is national park โ€” steep, forested hillside dropping to sandstone ledges and small beaches. The Basin, a campground and anchorage accessible only by water, provides one of the Sydney region's quietest overnight stops. The eastern shore has the settlement of Palm Beach, Scotland Island, and a series of marinas and yacht clubs. The Hawkesbury River, feeding into Broken Bay from the west, extends the cruising ground into a riverine landscape of sandstone cliffs, mangrove banks, and the occasional riverside settlement. Cowan Creek and Refuge Bay offer anchorages where the bushland closes in and the city feels distant. The typical charter here is shorter than the Mediterranean standard โ€” three to four days rather than a week โ€” reflecting the compact cruising area and the ease of access from Sydney. Weekend charters are common. The north-easterly sea breeze is the reliable summer wind, building through the afternoon to 15-20 knots and providing a spirited sail on the harbour or up Pittwater. The southerly change โ€” a cold front arriving from the south โ€” can bring 25-30 knot gusts and rough conditions at the Heads. Provisioning is easy in Sydney or at the marinas on Pittwater. Fuel and water are widely available. The Hawkesbury has limited facilities once upstream.
