St Croix

US Virgin Islands

Overview

The USVI's southern outpost, separated from St Thomas by 40 miles of open water, with wall diving at Buck Island and a quieter charter scene than the main Virgin Islands.

St Croix sits 40 nautical miles south of St Thomas, separated by open Caribbean water that makes the passage a genuine offshore crossing rather than an island hop. This geographic isolation gives St Croix a different character from the rest of the Virgin Islands chain โ€” less charter traffic, fewer visiting yachts, and a sense of being off the main circuit that appeals to sailors who find the Drake Channel too well-trodden. Christianted, the main town, has a waterfront boardwalk, Danish colonial architecture โ€” a reminder that the USVI were the Danish West Indies until 1917 โ€” and a harbour that accommodates visiting yachts at the town marina. Frederiksted, on the west coast, has a deep-water pier and the better sunset position. Between the two towns, the island's north shore is fringed with reef and mangrove, while the south shore is more developed. Buck Island, a national monument two miles off the north-east coast, is the primary sailing destination. The reef surrounding the island includes an underwater trail and some of the best-preserved coral in the USVI. Anchoring is on designated mooring balls; the national park service maintains the site. The water clarity and fish density make Buck Island a highlight for snorkellers and divers. The passage from St Thomas to St Croix crosses the Virgin Islands Trough, a deep channel with open-ocean swell and current. The trade winds make this a beam reach heading south and a beat heading north. Most charterers allow a full day for the crossing in each direction, and the weather window matters โ€” the passage should not be attempted in heavy weather or marginal visibility. St Croix's charter fleet is small compared to Tortola or St Thomas, which keeps costs moderate and availability more flexible outside peak season. The island's rum distillery โ€” Cruzan Rum โ€” offers tours, and the town of Christiansted has a concentration of restaurants and bars that punches above the island's size. Provisioning is adequate in Christiansted. Fuel and water are available at the marina. The island suits sailors who want the USVI's American convenience combined with a less trafficked cruising ground and a genuine open-water passage as part of the itinerary.
