Outer Atolls (Aldabra, Amirantes)

Outer Seychelles

Overview

The far-flung atolls of the Seychelles β€” Aldabra, Cosmoledo, Astove β€” where the giant tortoises outnumber people, the reefs are pristine, and the sailing is expedition-grade.

The outer Seychelles extend over a million square kilometres of Indian Ocean, a scatter of coral atolls, raised reefs, and sand cays that are among the most remote inhabited places in the western Indian Ocean. Aldabra, the largest raised coral atoll in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage site, is the centrepiece β€” home to over 100,000 giant tortoises, vast seabird colonies, and a lagoon so large that it creates its own tidal system. Reaching the outer atolls requires commitment. The Amirantes group lies roughly 200 nautical miles south-west of Mahe β€” a 36-48 hour passage. Aldabra is 700 miles further, requiring a multi-day ocean crossing. These are expedition charters, typically two to three weeks aboard a large catamaran or sailing yacht with professional crew, and priced accordingly. The Amirantes β€” Desroches, Poivre, D'Arros β€” offer coral atoll sailing closer to the inner islands. Desroches has a small resort and an airstrip; the others are largely uninhabited. The reefs are in excellent condition, with large pelagic fish, reef sharks, and sea turtles common on dives. Aldabra is the ultimate destination. Access requires a permit from the Seychelles Islands Foundation, and visiting numbers are strictly controlled. The atoll's lagoon, roughly 35 kilometres long, empties and fills through four main channels where the tidal currents can exceed five knots. The giant tortoises roam the raised coral platform, and the birdlife β€” red-footed boobies, frigatebirds, white-tailed tropicbirds β€” is extraordinary in density and diversity. Cosmoledo and Astove, south of Aldabra, are even more remote β€” prized by fly fishermen for their flats and by divers for their untouched walls. Facilities are non-existent; the yacht is home, workshop, and provisioning store. The weather follows the monsoon pattern. The inter-monsoon transitions β€” March-April and October-November β€” provide the best sailing windows with lighter winds and calmer seas. The south-east trades can produce uncomfortable conditions on exposed passages. Provisioning must be complete before departure from Mahe. There are no shops, no fuel docks, and no freshwater sources on the outer atolls. Self-sufficiency is absolute.
