New Zealand (Bay of Islands)

Northland

Overview

A hundred and forty-four islands in New Zealand's subtropical north, where the Maori cultural heritage, the poor Knights Islands marine reserve, and the summer sailing conditions draw a small but dedicated charter fleet.

The Bay of Islands occupies New Zealand's subtropical north, a body of sheltered water containing 144 islands scattered between the mainland coast and the open Pacific. The area holds deep significance in New Zealand's history โ€” the Treaty of Waitangi, founding the nation's relationship between the British Crown and Maori iwi, was signed here in 1840. The treaty grounds at Waitangi, on the bay's southern shore, provide the cultural anchor. Opua, on the bay's western shore, is the primary marina and charter base. The town is small โ€” a fuel dock, a chandlery, a cafe โ€” but the yacht services are reliable, and the customs office handles international arrivals for cruising yachts completing Pacific crossings. The bay opens eastward toward the islands: Urupukapuka, Moturua, Roberton Island, and many smaller islets. The standard charter route circles the inner islands, anchoring in bays with good holding over sand and exploring ashore on Department of Conservation walking tracks. Urupukapuka has a network of trails, archaeological pa sites (fortified Maori settlements), and the bay at Otehei for overnight anchoring. Roberton Island's twin lagoons are enclosed by a tombolo and provide sheltered swimming. For more ambitious itineraries, the Poor Knights Islands Marine Reserve sits 50 nautical miles south-east โ€” a group of volcanic islands with sea caves, archways, and subtropical marine life that includes subtropical and temperate species mixing at the edge of a warm current. No landing is permitted, but the diving and snorkelling are exceptional. The passage requires settled weather and a full day. The summer season โ€” November through March โ€” provides warm temperatures (22-28 degrees), variable winds from the south-west to north-east, and afternoon sea breezes that fill the sails when the synoptic pattern is slack. New Zealand weather is changeable; fronts pass through every few days, bringing wind shifts and occasional rain. Provisioning in Paihia, the main town opposite Opua, is adequate โ€” supermarkets, bakeries, and a good fish and chip shop. Russell, across the bay, is the historic settlement with restaurants and colonial-era buildings. Fuel and water are at Opua marina.
