Mauritius (North Coast)

Mascarene Islands

Overview

The north coast of Mauritius from Grand Baie, inside the reef lagoon, with day-sails to the offshore islands and the Indian Ocean's most accessible catamaran charter market.

Mauritius is a volcanic island in the western Indian Ocean, roughly 900 kilometres east of Madagascar. Its north coast, sheltered from the prevailing south-east trade winds by the island's mountainous interior, provides the charter base โ€” a reef-enclosed lagoon where the sailing is gentle and the offshore islands provide day-sail destinations. Grand Baie, on the north-west coast, is the primary departure point. The bay has several operators offering bareboat and skippered catamarans, and the resort infrastructure โ€” restaurants, shops, dive centres โ€” makes it the most developed sailing hub on the island. The lagoon between the reef and the shore is shallow and warm, with good snorkelling over coral patches. The principal day-sail destinations lie to the north. Ile aux Cerfs, off the east coast, is a popular catamaran excursion โ€” a low island with beaches and a golf course, typically visited on a full-day trip that rounds the island's northern tip. Coin de Mire, a volcanic rock islet five miles north of Grand Baie, is a nature reserve with no landing permitted but good diving on its submerged reef. Ile Plate and Ilot Gabriel, further north, are uninhabited islands with sandy beaches and reef snorkelling โ€” the standard overnight destination for charter catamarans. The sailing season runs April through November, outside the cyclone risk period (December-March). The south-east trades blow at 12-20 knots, but the north coast sits in the island's wind shadow, receiving a moderated and deflected breeze that makes conditions comfortable for intermediate sailors. The Mauritian charter market is primarily catamaran-based and day-sail oriented โ€” week-long bareboats are available but less common than in the Mediterranean. The cruising area is compact, and the lagoon's dimensions limit the scope for extended passages. What it offers instead is warm water, reliable conditions, and a base on an island whose cultural mix โ€” Indian, French, African, Chinese โ€” produces one of the Indian Ocean's most interesting cuisines. Provisioning in Grand Baie and nearby Port Louis is good. The central market in Port Louis is among the most vibrant in the Indian Ocean. Fuel and water are at the marinas. Prices are moderate by Indian Ocean standards.
