Lefkas

Ionian Sea

Overview

The Ionian's busiest charter base, connected to the mainland by bridge and to Preveza airport by a short drive, with flotilla routes south to Meganisi and Ithaca.

Lefkas โ€” also written Lefkada โ€” is the most-chartered base in the Ionian, and a strong contender for the most-chartered departure point in the entire Mediterranean. The island connects to the Greek mainland via a short swing bridge at its northern tip, and the Lefkada Canal runs along its eastern shore, creating a long, narrow waterway lined with charter company pontoons, boatyards, and chandleries. The proximity to Aktion/Preveza airport โ€” a twenty-minute drive โ€” makes Lefkas the easiest Greek island charter to reach. Flights from northern Europe arrive on Saturday mornings; by early afternoon, crews are provisioned and aboard. The canal itself is a gentle introduction: flat water, minimal current, and a speed limit that prevents any drama. The standard Lefkas flotilla and bareboat route heads south from the canal through the islands of Meganisi, Kastos, and Kalamos, with the mainland coast of Aitoloakarnania providing shelter to the east. Meganisi's harbour at Vathi is a frequent first-night stop โ€” a tiny, deep inlet surrounded by tavernas where the owner waves you into a berth. Sivota, on the mainland opposite Lefkas's south-eastern coast, has a well-protected harbour and good provisioning for mid-week restocking. More ambitious itineraries continue south to Ithaca and Kefalonia. The passage from Meganisi to Vathi, Ithaca's main port, is around 15 nautical miles and typically made in a single morning. Ithaca is greener and quieter than its larger neighbour; Vathi's deep harbour is well-sheltered and the town provides a pleasant evening ashore. From there, Fiskardo on Kefalonia's northern tip completes the loop before the return north to Lefkas. The wind is the Ionian standard: a north-westerly thermal that builds from late morning and drops in the evening. Force 3-4 is typical; Force 5 is occasional and usually brief. This reliability is the defining feature of the Lefkas charter experience โ€” predictable enough for first-timers, consistent enough for sailing instruction, and gentle enough for families with children. Provisioning is best done in Lefkas town, where a large supermarket sits near the canal bridge. The town itself is a pleasant, low-key Greek settlement with a pedestrian main street, a few good bakeries, and none of the resort-town atmosphere of the more touristic islands. Fuel and water are available along the canal.
