Ionian Islands

Ionian Sea

Overview

Greece's most forgiving sailing ground: Corfu, Lefkada, Kefalonia, and Ithaca in sheltered Ionian waters with reliable light winds and short passages.

The Ionian Islands occupy Greece's western coast, separated from the mainland by channels that rarely exceed a few miles wide. This geography creates naturally sheltered sailing water, and the absence of the meltemi โ€” which dominates the Aegean to the east โ€” makes the Ionian the default recommendation for first-time charterers and flotilla holidays. Lefkada is the primary charter base, accessible via Aktion airport (also called Preveza) and connected to the mainland by a short bridge. The town marina and several private quays along the canal handle a large charter fleet. From Lefkada, the standard route runs south through Meganisi โ€” a small island with a beautiful harbour at Vathi โ€” and on to Ithaca and Kefalonia. Fiskardo, at Kefalonia's northern tip, is the prettiest harbour in the Ionian: Venetian-era buildings, a sheltered bay, and waterfront restaurants where stern-to dining is customary. North of Lefkada, Corfu is the largest Ionian island and has its own charter base at Gouvia Marina. Corfu's cruising ground extends to the Albanian coast and the small islands of Paxos and Antipaxos, where the water colour shifts to an improbable turquoise over white sand. The anchorage at Lakka, on Paxos's northern tip, is one of the most photographed in Greece. Wind in the Ionian follows a dependable summer pattern. A light north-westerly thermal builds from late morning, peaks at 10-15 knots in the early afternoon, and drops by evening. Calms are common in the morning and after sunset. This predictability suits passage planning โ€” depart after breakfast, sail with the breeze, arrive mid-afternoon โ€” but it also means motorsailing is frequent when the wind fails to materialise. The Ionian's reputation as a beginner's destination is earned but not the whole story. Kefalonia's west coast, facing the open Ionian Sea, can develop a significant swell, and the channel between Lefkada and the mainland funnels wind in a way that occasionally catches newcomers off guard. That said, the distances are short, the shelter is always nearby, and the risk profile is lower than almost any other Mediterranean sailing area. Provisioning is straightforward in Lefkada town and at Gouvia. Island shops are small but adequate. Eating ashore is part of the experience โ€” taverna dining in Vathi, Fiskardo, or any of the smaller harbours is good and reasonably priced.
