IJsselmeer & Wadden Sea

Netherlands

Overview

Holland's inland sea and the UNESCO-listed Wadden mudflats, where traditional flat-bottomed boats, historic harbour towns, and a flat horizon define a distinctly Dutch sailing experience.

The IJsselmeer is an inland sea created by the Afsluitdijk, the 32-kilometre dam that sealed off the former Zuiderzee from the North Sea in 1932. What remains is a shallow, freshwater body of roughly 1,100 square kilometres, ringed by historic harbour towns and sailed by a fleet that includes traditional Dutch sailing vessels โ€” boeiers, tjalken, lemmers โ€” alongside modern yachts. Charter bases are scattered around the IJsselmeer's shore: Lelystad, Enkhuizen, Hoorn, and Monnickendam are the most common departure points. The fleet often includes traditional flat-bottomed boats, which suit the shallow waters and can dry out safely if grounded. Modern yachts with lifting keels or twin keels are the practical alternative. The harbour towns are the IJsselmeer's primary attraction. Enkhuizen has a maritime museum and a walled harbour that has changed little since the 17th century. Hoorn, the birthplace of Cape Horn's namesake Willem Schouten, has a main square overlooking the harbour. Volendam and Marken retain a fishing-village character โ€” tourist-oriented but architecturally genuine. Beyond the Afsluitdijk's locks, the Wadden Sea extends along the northern coast โ€” a UNESCO World Heritage tidal flat system that connects the Dutch, German, and Danish coasts. The Wadden Islands โ€” Texel, Terschelling, Ameland, Schiermonnikoog โ€” offer a different sailing experience: tidal navigation, drying harbours, seal colonies, and a landscape of sand, sky, and horizontal light. The passage through the locks and into the Wadden requires tidal planning; the islands themselves reward with wide beaches and a sense of space. The wind is typically south-westerly, 10-20 knots, though the flat landscape offers no shelter and conditions can feel more exposed than the wind speed suggests. The IJsselmeer is shallow โ€” three to five metres over most of its area โ€” and a steep chop builds quickly in strong wind. Provisioning is easy throughout โ€” every harbour town has shops, and the Dutch standard of food retail is high. Marinas are numerous and well-equipped. Fuel and water are at every stop. The season runs May through September; summer evenings are long, with light lasting past 2200 in June.
