Fiji (Yasawa & Mamanuca)

Western Fiji

Overview

The Yasawa and Mamanuca island chains west of Viti Levu, where Fijian village hospitality, reef-fringed lagoons, and the blue lagoon anchorage define Pacific island sailing.

Fiji's western island chains โ€” the Mamanuca and Yasawa groups โ€” provide the most accessible Pacific island sailing outside French Polynesia. Strung along a north-south axis west of the main island of Viti Levu, they offer a progression from the developed resort islands of the Mamanuca group to the village-based, less-visited Yasawas further north. The charter base is at Port Denarau, a marina complex on Viti Levu's west coast, near Nadi's international airport. The fleet is predominantly catamarans, and both bareboat and skippered options are available. The passage from Denarau into the Mamanuca group takes a few hours, with the first islands โ€” Malolo, Castaway, Mana โ€” visible from the departure dock. The Mamanuca islands are small, resort-developed, and reef-enclosed. The sailing between them is short โ€” most passages are under an hour โ€” and the anchorages are well-charted. The Blue Lagoon, between Nanuya Lailai and Nanuya Levu in the southern Yasawas, was the filming location for the 1980 film and provides an anchorage of genuinely spectacular clarity. The Yasawa chain extends 90 kilometres north from the Mamanucas. The islands are larger, more mountainous, and less developed. Village visits are a feature of Yasawa cruising โ€” Fijian hospitality includes kava ceremonies, communal meals, and a warmth toward visiting sailors that is genuine rather than transactional. Waya, Naviti, and Sawa-i-Lau โ€” the latter known for its limestone cave, accessible by swimming through an underwater passage โ€” are the standard stops. The south-east trade winds provide reliable sailing during the dry season, May through October. Wind strength varies from 10-20 knots, producing comfortable conditions inside the reef-protected waters. The wet season, November through April, brings cyclone risk, higher humidity, and less predictable wind. Provisioning at Port Denarau is adequate โ€” Nadi's supermarkets cover standard needs, and the local market provides excellent tropical produce. In the Yasawas, provisioning is limited to what villages can sell โ€” fish, root vegetables, fruit. Water and fuel are available at Denarau; carry sufficient supplies for the week.
