North Brittany

Overview

Saint-Malo and the north Brittany coast, where the tidal range reaches 12 metres, the pilotage is technical, and the Channel Islands sit within a day's crossing.

North Brittany's coast is defined by its tides. The range at Saint-Malo reaches 12 metres at equinoctial springs โ€” among the largest in the world โ€” transforming the landscape twice daily from deep harbour to exposed granite seabed. Sailing here requires a relationship with the tide table that Mediterranean sailors do not need: every departure, arrival, and anchorage is timed around the water level and the stream. Saint-Malo is the natural charter base. The walled city โ€” rebuilt stone by stone after near-total destruction in 1944 โ€” sits on a promontory above a harbour that dries completely at low water. The marina at Port des Bas-Sablons, south of the old town, has a locked basin that maintains water level regardless of tide, and charter companies operate from here. The city itself is handsome, compact, and well-provisioned. The cruising ground extends in three directions. West along the coast, the Ile de Brehat sits behind a complex approach of rocks, channels, and transit marks that exemplify Breton pilotage โ€” technically demanding, deeply satisfying when executed correctly, and unforgiving of inattention. East, the coast toward Mont Saint-Michel passes through the bay where the tidal range is most extreme; the mount itself, visible from well offshore, is best approached by road rather than by boat. North, the Channel Islands โ€” Jersey, Guernsey, Sark, Herm โ€” lie 30-40 miles across the channel. Jersey's St Helier has a marina in a tidal basin; Guernsey's St Peter Port is the more atmospheric harbour. The crossing involves navigating the Minquiers and Chausey archipelagos โ€” granite reef systems that require careful passage planning with the tide. The Chausey Islands, midway between Saint-Malo and Jersey, are a French archipelago of 365 islands at low tide, 52 at high tide โ€” the tidal transformation is extreme, and the anchorage at Grande Ile, in settled weather, provides a memorable overnight stop among the exposed granite. Provisioning in Saint-Malo is excellent. The markets, creperies, and seafood restaurants are among Brittany's best. Fuel and water are at the marina. The season is June through September; even in August, a fleece and waterproofs are daily wear.
