Bohuslan (West Coast)

West Sweden

Overview

Sweden's west coast from Gothenburg north to the Norwegian border, where the granite skerries turn pink at sunset, the shrimp is fresh off the trawler, and the fishing villages are painted in regulation Falu red.

Bohuslan occupies Sweden's west coast, a 150-kilometre stretch from Gothenburg north to the Norwegian border. The coastline is a labyrinth of granite skerries, channels, and fishing villages painted in the regulation Falu red and white that defines the Swedish coastal aesthetic. The sailing is through narrow passages between smooth, rounded rocks, with harbours that appear around headlands and anchorages that offer shelter behind low-lying islets. Gothenburg provides the charter base, with operators at Bjorlanda Kile and marinas in the city's harbour. The passage north from the city follows a marked channel through the inner skerries, with the Marstrand fortress β€” a 17th-century island stronghold β€” providing the first overnight stop. Marstrand's harbour is the social hub of the Bohuslan sailing community, hosting match racing events and a summer crowd that fills the guest pontoons. North of Marstrand, the coast becomes less visited. Lysekil, FiskebΓ€ckskil, and the Koster Islands β€” Sweden's westernmost point β€” mark the progression toward the Norwegian border. SmΓΆgen, a fishing village with a long wooden boardwalk over the harbour, is the quintessential Bohuslan stop: granite, painted wood, shrimp sandwiches eaten on the dock, and a sunset over the outer skerries. The Koster Islands and the surrounding marine national park β€” Sweden's first β€” offer the clearest water on the west coast and the best opportunities for observing the marine life that the cold, nutrient-rich North Sea current supports. The outer skerries here are exposed to the Skagerrak, and conditions can change quickly when weather systems move through. The cuisine is a defining feature. West coast shrimp, boiled in seawater and served cold on bread, is the standard harbour snack. Oysters, farmed and wild, are available at several harbours. The seafood restaurants in the fishing villages are among Sweden's best, and provisioning from harbourside fish shops is part of the daily routine. The wind is westerly, 10-20 knots, with the North Sea providing more consistent breeze than the sheltered Baltic. The season is short β€” June through August β€” with long summer evenings and water temperatures that reach a swimmable 18-20 degrees in a good year.
