Balearics (Ibiza & Formentera)

Balearic Islands

Overview

The western Balearics, where Ibiza's social energy meets Formentera's transparent shallows across a short channel that ranks among the Mediterranean's most beautiful day-sails.

Ibiza and Formentera sit at the western end of the Balearic chain, separated by a channel of roughly three nautical miles that contains some of the clearest water in the Mediterranean. The posidonia seagrass beds between the islands โ€” a UNESCO-protected ecosystem โ€” filter the water to a transparency that makes anchoring over white sand feel like floating in air. This short passage between the two islands is the defining experience of the cruising ground. Ibiza town, on the island's south-east coast, is the primary charter base. Marina Ibiza and the nearby Club Nautico handle the fleet, and the old town โ€” Dalt Vila, a walled hilltop quarter โ€” provides the scenic backdrop. The island's reputation for nightlife is earned but increasingly secondary to a broader identity that includes yoga retreats, farm-to-table restaurants, and a year-round creative community. Formentera, reached in under an hour from Ibiza town, has no airport and limited development. The island is flat, arid, and fringed with beaches. Ses Illetes, on the northern spit, is frequently cited as the finest beach in Spain. The anchorage there is shallow โ€” catamarans draw too much in places โ€” and can be crowded with day-trip boats by mid-morning. The south coast of Formentera offers quieter alternatives: Es Calo, a small harbour village, and Cap de Barbaria, a remote headland with a lighthouse. Ibiza's west coast has the sunset anchorages โ€” Cala Comte, Cala Bassa, Cala Tarida โ€” where the evening light draws boats in rows facing the horizon. The north coast is wilder and less visited, with cliffs, sea caves, and the anchorage at Cala Portinatx. Wind is the gentlest in the Balearics. Summer thermals build lightly from the south in the afternoon, rarely exceeding 15 knots. Calms are frequent in the morning and evening. This makes the area well-suited to less experienced crews and to those who prioritise swimming and shore time over ambitious sailing. Provisioning in Ibiza town is good but expensive. Formentera's shops are small and pricey. Fuel and water are available at the main marinas. The overall cost here reflects the island's positioning โ€” this is a premium destination with prices to match.
